Things to do in Fujairah

Fujairah is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the region and is known for its mountainous terrain. The fifth largest emirate of the United Arab Emirates, Fujairah is the only one that has a coastline on the Gulf of Oman, on the eastern front of the UAE. Nestled behind the picturesque Hajar Mountains, Fujairah has plenty to offer to all visitors. Here’s some of our favourite things to do in Fujairah:

Fujairah Heritage Village

A must-see for anyone looking to learn more about the UAE’s traditional way of life. Visitors can see authentic fishing boats, houses and forts and discover the history of the area and its people.

Fujairah Fort

The oldest fort in the UAE, Fujairah Fort was built in 1670. The fort was originally used as a defensive building and a home for the ruling family. After it was damaged by British bombardment in the early 20th century, the fort is now a historical and tourist landmark.

Bull Butting

With origins in Portugal, Bull Butting was introduced to the region, specifically to Fujairah during the 16th and 17th century. Today it is a favourite local pastime on Fridays, where crowds gather to cheer raging bulls lock horns. Tourists are welcome as well.

Al Hayl Castle

One of the oldest and most famous castles in the region, Al Hayl Castle was built over 250 years ago. Originally used for surveillance, the castle has a fort, watchtower, bedrooms, kitchen and meeting rooms in an enclosed compound. Visitors are welcome to a guided tour.

Masafi

A small village near the Hajar Moutains, Masafi is most famous because of the bottled water company from the area. The Friday market in Masafi is a popular attraction among locals and tourists, where visitors can purchase local fresh produce from farmers, souvenirs, pots, rugs and even eat a fully cooked meal.
