Three Unmissable Galleries in Liverpool

One of the most exciting cities to visit in the UK, Liverpool has it all. With a proud cultural heritage that the locals are only too happy to share with visitors, there’s so much to enjoy on your weekend break in Liverpool. If you love visiting galleries, there are a few in the city that you should check out. 

1. Walker Art Gallery
Suitable for – With one of England’s most extensive art collections outside London, this gallery is perfect if you’re captivated by renaissance masterpieces, Tudor portraits and Victorian and Pre-Raphaelite art. 

Don’t miss – To mark the 500th anniversary of Leonardo da Vinci’s death, the Walker Art Gallery is exhibiting 12 of the Renaissance master’s drawings until 6 May 2019. Later in the year, visitors can celebrate Glaswegian style at an exhibition dedicated to Charles Rennie Mackintosh, an architectural prodigy, designer and artist. 

Opening hours – The gallery is open from 10am to 5pm every day, except for Christmas Eve to Boxing Day, and New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day. 

Entry price – Although donations are welcome, entry is completely free. However, there may be a charge for some special exhibitions. 

2. Tate Liverpool
Suitable for – With a name that’s iconic around the world, the gallery is known for its excellent exhibitions of international modern and contemporary art. It’s ideal if you’re particularly interested in British art. 

Don’t miss – From daily talks to regular workshops, special events for kids and after-hours openings which boast an exciting blend of art and music, there’s always lots going on at the gallery. Check the events calendar to see what’s on when you’re in town, and look out for exhibitions such as the immersive and colourful South America-Inspired Sol Calero in 2019. 

Opening hours – The Tate Liverpool is open from 10am to 5pm every day. It’s closed for Christmas but open on all other bank holidays including New Year’s Day. 

Entry Price – Entry’s free, except for special exhibitions. You can get unlimited, free access to special exhibitions by becoming a member.

3. The Bluecoat
Suitable for – If you’re looking to experience visual art, literature, music and design in Liverpool, don’t miss the Bluecoat. It’s the city’s creative hub and the UK’s oldest centre for contemporary arts. 

Don’t miss – As well as the usual exhibitions, there are music, dance, literature, live art and heritage events all year round. The Ark addresses how art, science, spirituality and politics can combat 21st-century problems, while Alexis Teplin premiers her new paintings, performance and film work at the Bluecoat from October 2019 to February 2020. 

Opening hours – The centre is open every day apart from Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day. Opening hours are 9am to 6pm Monday to Saturday, and 11am to 6pm on Sunday, while the galleries open at 11am every day. 

Entry price – While some events and exhibitions are free, there are charges for others. Bookings can be made in person, over the phone or online via the Bluecoat website
