Sion: magical scenery and vibrant cultural life in the canton of Valais

A rich heritage
With a rich history - the oldest trace of human settlement dating back to the late Mesolithic – and a rich cultural life, Zion is an ideal setting for an enjoyable weekend without spending too much.
Cultural and artistic life
Sion has no fewer than four fortresses that faithfully watch over the inhabitants of the city. The Valère basilica, former residence of the Canons, and the Tourbillon Castle both offer an incomparable view over the city and its surroundings. Further down, continue your journey back in time by visiting the Château de Marjorie, residence of the officers of the Prince-Bishop, and the Montorge Castle, dating back to the thirteenth century. To make the most of the city and its surroundings, go for a hike along the irrigation channels called “bisses” in French. They have been dug into the mountain’s sides to provide irrigation for crops and vineyards, which enjoy 2000 hours of sunshine a year! The Bisse de Lentine will lead you through the city and its surrounding hills, whereas the Bisse de Montorge will take you to the famous Domaine du Mont d'Or and the magnificent old Johannisberg vines.
The capital of the Vaud Canton is a major musical city that hosts many cultural events throughout the year. The city famously hosts the 40-year-old International Organ Festival –based around the oldest playable organ in the world – and the Guinness Irish Festival. In summer time, Sion turns into a giant open-air cinema and lights a thousand fires during "Zion Enlightenment", a spectacular sound and light show set in its medieval buildings. A truly magical show, which you can enjoy for free from August to October, this is not to be missed!
