Porto Holidays – City Break Guide

Come to Porto and enjoy your perfect holiday break. Explore charming neighborhoods, ancient monuments and delicious food!

Two-time winner of the Best European Destination award, Porto is surely one of the hottest destinations in Europe. In this city by the Douro River, you’ll find medieval traces right next to modern buildings, lively locals always ready to help and some of the best Portuguese dishes – always home cooked.
The River and the City
Start your journey in the Ribeira area and stroll along the waterfront where you’ll notice the colorful houses and the lively vibe of this part of the city. Then, head to Gaia by crossing the famous D. Luís I bridge to the other side of the river and marvel at the amazing view of the city. In Gaia, visit one of the Port wine cellars and taste this ancient and very famous wine, produced in the Douro valley for centuries. In downtown Porto, make sure to visit Palácio da Bolsa, built in the 19th center and one of the most magnificent buildings in the area. Then, head to the S. Bento railway station, known for the incredible tiles (“azulejos” in Portuguese) that adorn the station walls. Continue your way up and stroll along the Aliados Avenue, one of the highlights of the city. To enjoy another great view over the city and the river, visit the Crystal Palace where you’ll find the perfect place to relax, enjoy nature and give food to the local peacocks that wander around the park.
What to Eat in Porto
In Porto you won’t have to worry too much about looking for a great place to eat. Almost in every corner you’ll find incredible restaurants with traditional Portuguese food. Before you leave the city, make sure to try the famous Francesinha, a sandwich made with ham, sausage, steak, cheese and a very special and secret sauce. Another very famous dish from the city is the “Porto’s tripe stew” (“Tripas à Moda do Porto” in Portuguese), made with beans and cooked tripe.
