Relaxation and leisure on the banks of Lake Annecy

With its canals running through its old districts, Annecy is a superlatively romantic town. The Pont des Amours bridge over Le Vassé canal marks the entrance to the old town and serves as its symbol. Walk the length of the canal to see frolicking ducks, then turn off towards Le Thiou via Place Notre-Dame. This square has various historical sites, including a town hall which was used until the 19th century. Continue up Rue Jean-Jacques Rousseau to reach the ancient episcopal palace. Keep going to see the Quai de l’Île for a perfect view over the Palais de l’Isle, an ancient Annecy icon. From there, you can follow the river for the entire length of the old town.

Lake Annecy has 40km of cycle tracks at the gateway to the ‘Venice of the Alps’. They run past a dozen beaches, which often have lawns. But if it’s sand you want, we recommend that you head for the tranquil Angon cove or the vast Doussard beach. You can swim safely in the marked bathing zones. If you would like to try kayaking or manning a pedalo, Sevrier and Menthon-Saint-Bernard are the destinations for you. If you’re a keen walker, you won’t have any trouble getting up the Chère rock. Once you’re at the top, you’ll be rewarded with spectacular views of the lake below.
