Fancy exploring the city’s ancient districts by bike? It’s a good way of keeping your costs down during your holidays in Strasbourg and having a lovely time while you’re at it! Go down the quays of the Ill, which are lined with wood-panelled houses. Start your explorations by the once-roofed bridges. You’ll see the Vauban dam with its terrace and beautiful view over the Grande Île, a UNESCO World Heritage site. After that, it’s time to plunge into old Strasbourg. Stop off at the Musée Alsacien to see its reconstructions of ancient rural scenes, or the Musée des Beaux-Arts where Flemish and Italian paintings are on display. On the Place de la Cathédrale you’ll see the fascinating Maison Kammerzell. From there it’s just minutes to the University of Strasbourg’s impressive botanical gardens.

The Alsace wine route starts in Strasbourg and takes you through the region’s idyllic countryside. You’ll be struck by the village of Marlenheim with its narrow streets and timbered houses clustered around Sainte-Richarde church. A little further on is Westhoffen, where both grapes and cherries are picked. In fact this is Alsace’s cherry capital. They’re available all year round in jams and fruit syrups. Follow your route through the vineyards and you’ll get to Osthoffen. In this village with an elegant château, you can buy inexpensive Riesling wines from the winegrowers who harvest the grapes.
