Things to see and do in Basel for free Ideas for free activities to help you explore this Swiss city on the border with France and Germany.

Basel's iconic buildings
Basel's most beautiful monuments are free to visit and can be found in the old town, located in the Grossbasel district on the left bank of the Rhine. Don't miss the spectacular, richly embellished red sandstone façade of Basel’s town hall (Rathaus) on the market square (Marktplatz). Step inside the building's courtyard and take in the 17th-century murals. Just a few streets away is the Basel Minster cathedral, also made from red sandstone and colourful tiles. Its terrace overlooking the Rhine offers gorgeous sweeping views of the city. Stroll through the medieval town and admire the three gateways that date back to the city's 15th-century fortifications, including the Gate of Spalen and its square tower.
Modern architecture
Basel is also renowned for its avant-garde buildings designed by some of the world's greatest architects such as Frank Gehry, Renzo Piano and Mario Botta. At the tourist information centre, pick up a brochure that features three different walking itineraries to find out more about their legacy. The Roche Tower by architects Herzog & de Meuron is emblematic of the city's modern side, as is the BRI's round building designed by Mario Botta.
Free walks on the wild side
Basel is split in two by the Rhine, and knows how to show off its natural spaces to their best. On sunny days, locals and visitors enjoy wandering along the landscaped river banks or strolling through the flower-lined paths that lead through the university's botanical garden, tucked away in the city centre and free to visit. Another free park is the Lange Erlen animal park, which offers pleasant walks where you can see peacocks, storks and ducks roaming freely. Lynx, deer, ponies and boar can also be seen in pens inspired by the animals' natural habitats.
