Savour some Avignon specialities in a typically Provençal setting
Avignon impresses with its sheer number of historic sites. We suggest you start your visit of the old part of town at the ramparts. When you walk these ancient city walls, you can easily get to Saint-Bénézet bridge, the famous subject of famous French song Sur le Pont d’Avignon. Construction began on the bridge in the 12th century. It was partially destroyed by high river levels, which is why only half now remains to bridge the Rhone. At the foot of the ramparts, you will notice the Place du Palais which sits before the gigantic Palais des Papes. This is another attraction worth spending a few hours on. If you’re pushed for time, make sure you at least get to the pope’s private apartments to see the stunning Italian frescos.
Let your taste buds be your guide… Here, cakes are sweet but their prices are even sweeter! That’s just one good reason to try a local Savoie biscuit at breakfast. During the day, the old town’s artisan bakeries are the place to go for a bite to eat. You won’t be able to resist a sandwich with the scent of warm bread in the air, and you might like to add some local cold cuts to yours. Try the smoked ham for instance, or some sausages with nuts. Or why not taste some of the region’s cheeses such as brézain or reblochon.
