The Amsterdam experience in 24 hours!

The Amsterdam experience in 24 hours!

Amsterdam is a world-class city in compact form. The full experience in 24 hours is easy as there’s something for everyone; morning, noon and night.

Amsterdam is a perfect city to visit if you’re looking for an adventurous weekend break. Uncovering every corner is done with ease thanks in part to its compact composition. By far the best way to do this is by bicycle. Bike-rental shops are spread throughout the city such as Amsterdam Central Station for example. A relatively cheap means of transport and full freedom to navigate. Another efficient way to maximise sightseeing is by boat through Amsterdam’s canals. Read more on how to divide morning, noon and night in the Dutch capital.
Morning: culture or market?
A majority of the museums are fairly quiet during the early hours. The larger museums are found around Museumplein in Amsterdam. Avoid long lines and irritation by visiting the Rijksmuseum, Stedelijk Museum and the Van Gogh Museum on time! Refuel with an especially delicious cup of coffee or tea at Back to Black, just a stone’s throw away from the Rijksmuseum. Another way to fill the morning is by visiting one of the many markets akin to Amsterdam. The choices are plentiful and the mood’s enjoyable during the AM hours. Visit the popular Albert Cuyp for example, or the Noordermarkt on Saturdays. You can find the best apple pie Amsterdam has to offer next door at Winkel 43.
Noon: something for everyone
Shop till you drop during the afternoon in Amsterdam. District De 9 Straatjes (9 Streets) has a wide assortment when it comes to different styles and price. Woven through the canals of Amsterdam, it makes for a flavourful shopping experience. Head to the Kalverstraat and from there onto the Leidsestraat for mainstream brands. Crossing the IJ river for a trip to Amsterdam Noord in the northern part of the city is another great way to spend the afternoon. From Amsterdam Central Station, take the pont, or ferry, to the fashionable and somewhat out of the ordinary NDSM terrain. On the NDSM, enjoy a quality lunch at restaurant Pllek with a view overlooking the IJ. In the eastern part of Amsterdam, accessible by tram, lies Brouwerij ‘t IJ. Located next to an authentic Dutch windmill, the brewery is the place to enjoy a refreshing beer local to Amsterdam. Brouwerij ‘t IJ can easily be combined with a trip to the oldest zoo in The Netherlands, Artis, and Oosterpark.
Night: full speed ahead
The evening takes on a personality of its own in Amsterdam. Find a variety of restaurants, bars and clubs on the Leidseplein for example. The area in and around Leidseplein enjoys a reputation for being the best when coming to know Amsterdam’s nightlife. For cocktails on par with the finest in world, be sure to head to Hiding in Plain Sight or Bar Oldenhoff. But there’s more to do in Amsterdam besides indulging yourself in bars, clubs and restaurants. A unique experience in one of the smallest theatres in the country, de Kleine Komedie, can’t be missed. The theatre makes up for size by consistently attracting some of the larger names in the business for regular performances!
